Why ‘Inner’ Safeguarding?

While external safeguarding systems and processes are essential for protecting children, young people and vulnerable adults from harm, true safety starts from within.

Staff need the inner tools and resourcesto care for themselves, manage stress, and show up in ways that support their wellbeing in order to consistently share safety with others.

Inner Safeguarding recognises that staff need to be “in-powered” to cope with challenging behaviour and demanding work environments.

When caring adults are equipped with inner resources, they are better able to respond rather than react to those in their care.

Building Inner Safeguarding skills in caring adults supports safe environments. Those skills include:

Self-awareness – Recognising personal triggers and stress responses
Self-care – Cultivating habits that support emotional, psychological, and physical wellbeing
Self-regulation – Managing emotions effectively, even in difficult situations
Self-compassion – Treating yourself with kindness (because no-one is perfect).
